This is a preliminary (very short) history of Quin Films Limited. A more comprehensive history will be posted eventually.

February 2010

Quin Films Limited was established in Dublin in 1975, as Bailebeag Film and Television Enterprises, by Jim Quin and Bill Russell, to produce a bilingual (English/Irish) stopmotion series on 16mm for Radio Telefís Éireann (R.T.E.).  The first series was called ‘Bailebeag’ (Smalltown) and 4 x 15 minute episodes were produced.
Jim Quin renamed the company as Quinfilms Limited in 1977 and he continued to produce stopmotion programmes for R.T.E. – series like Bailebeag and Lug na Lacha and hundreds of inserts for other RTE childrens’ programmes, especially Muintir na Móna (The Bog People) for R.T.E.’s Dilín Ó Deamhas and Tongue Twister, Faherty’s Garden and Gregory Gráinneog inserts for R.T.E.’s Bosco.
In 1982, production was moved from Dublin to County Tipperary, where a large, purpose-built stopmotion studio was constructed in 1987. David Quin joined the company in 1984, as an animator/director and James M. Quin joined in 1990 as a director.
Quinfilms continued to produce series and inserts in Tipperary for RTE until 1999, switching from 16mm production to digital video in 1995. From 1999, the company started to concentrate on CGI production. David Quin then freelanced in Brown Bag Films in Dublin from 1999 until 2006, working on tv commercials, short films and corporate projects, while still producing some short films with Quinfilms (‘Florida War’ and ‘Forest’).
In 2007, David Quin closed Quinfilms Limited. The Tipperary studio continues to function – in 2008, David Quin produced a stopmotion short film (‘T’was a Terrible Hard Work’). Since 2009, David Quin has begun testing a stopmotion series for the internet (‘cutbacks’) (www.dailymotion.com/cutbacks).
